WaPo Regions

Earlier this year, The Washington Post wrote about Georgia’s political geography.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/politics/georgia-political-geography/

I took the 2020 county level results (as of Friday) and applied them to the regions. A point or less separate the President, Senator Perdue, and all Republican candidates combined in the special, EXCEPT for the Atlanta region, where Perdue overperformed the President by 1.4-points.

Senator Perdue was also the top Republican performer by a more narrow margin in the suburbs and the Black Belt, and even moreso in the Piedmont and South. He very slightly underperformed the Republican numbers for the President and combined GOP in special in the North.

GOP Performance by Region

The other thing I wanted to look at was Senator Loeffler’s performance by these region, particularly in comparison to the other Republican votes.

The chart below breaks Loeffler’s performance by election day, absentee and advanced voters versus the TOTAL GOP II performance combined. The columns to the right show the difference.

Senate II results, Loeffler and all GOP with difference, by region and vote method

Among TOTAL VOTES:

In the Atlanta region, Loeffler received the majority of the Republican votes, 12.6% of the 21.7% total for Republicans. This is true in the suburbs as well, 23.1% Loeffler of the 40.5% total for the GOP. As well as in the Piedmont and the Black Belt.

She received nearly half of the Republican votes in the South 30.1% of the 61.1% cast.

The North is the only region where she did not win a majority of the Republicans votes cast, where she received 34.9% of the 73% total GOP score.

Among Election Day voters:

Loeffler matched or beat the Republican field everywhere but the North, where the gap narrows slightly.

Among Absentee Mail voters:

Loeffler matched or beat the Republican field everywhere but the North, but again a smaller margin.

Among Advanced voters:

Loeffler matched or beat the GOP field in regions except the North and the South. In the those two regions, the field beat her by 5-points and 2-points respectively. the largest margins in those region by vote method.
